On 29 August, MMW Postdoc Dr Margaret Osborne presented at the 2013 International Symposium on Performance Science at The University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, on research funded by The University of Melbourne’s Faculty of VCA and MCM. Using wait-list control methodology (a world first in this area) with adolescent school music students, Margaret’s research provides solid evidence that a group performance psychology program, implemented within a school environment, successfully reduces music performance anxiety and improves resilience to learn and perform music, manifested through significant increases in self-belief, planning, persistence, and control over successful outcomes, as well as reduced failure avoidance, self-sabotage and disengagement.
