Dr Margaret Osborne

Research Fellow & Performance Psychologist

Dr Margaret Osborne is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow and Lecturer at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music and Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences at The University of Melbourne. She is also a Registered Psychologist, Occupational Rehabilitation and Careers Counselor, and past-President of the Australian Society for Performing Arts Healthcare.

As a performance scientist, her research investigates how psychological techniques can improve musicians' capacity to cope with performance anxiety and optimize performance, and she is a world leader in this area of research with adolescent musicians. She also coordinates and teaches the subject Peak Performance Under Pressure.

She is working with Professor Gary McPherson and colleagues at the University of New South Wales, Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and the Royal College of Music on an ARC Discovery Project which examines motivation and practice quality in musicians who are undertaking advanced training in music performance.

As a clinician, she works with anxiety and other forms of emotional distress, specialising in music and the performing arts, public speaking and sport.

As a result of her academic and professional practice, Margaret is passionate about assisting performers to engage in effective learning and preparation stategies for optimal performance; to manage performance anxiety and develop emotional resilience; and music learning to improve cognitive abilities and emotional wellbeing.
